Freeform was featured prominently in Apple’s initial demos of iOS 16, iPad OS 16, and macOS Ventura. For those who aren’t familiar, this relatively new feature on your fantastic iPhone, flexible iPad, or powerful Mac enables you to freely generate ideas alone or with others.
You can add whatever you choose, including words, images, doodles, hyperlinks, and more. Everything you need to know to get started with this software and get the most out of it is listed below.
Apple first hinted at its new whiteboard app, Freeform, in June 2022. Some of its features were featured during the WWDC22 keynote, and the release date was announced as being before the end of the year.
For those who aren’t familiar, it can be thought of as a blank slate upon which to muse and plot. You can type, draw, add files, and play media with it. There are, however, countless additional ways to stimulate creative thought. Here you will find detailed instructions for using this OS-wide utility.
The Freeform app is compatible with iOS, Android, and Windows. As a result, we’ll only show it off on the iPad, as that’s where it makes the most sense. The identical set of capabilities, excluding support for Apple Pencil, is available to those who use iPhones or Macs instead. So, shall we?

Freeform Requirements
The Apple Freeform app requires at least one of the following devices in order to function properly.
- A compatible iPhone with iOS 16.2 or later.
- Any iPad with iOS version 16.2 or later. It is recommended, but not mandatory, to use an Apple Pencil.
- A Mac running Version 13.1 or later of macOS Ventura.
The Different App Sections
There are four default tabs in the Freeform app: All Boards, Recent, Shared, and Favorites. The app’s equivalent is called “boards,” and each one may serve as a blank canvas for as much or as little of your creative output as you like. If you remove a forum, the number of Recently Deleted forums increases by one. You have unlimited board space to make as many as you like.
All Boards: As the name implies, this tab lists all of the boards you’ve made in the Freeform app. You can choose between seeing the boards as icons or as a list. They can be arranged in any way you like, by date, name, etc.
You can find the boards you’ve recently made or edited in the Recents area. Similarly, you can sort icons or a list according to your preferences.
Since many individuals use Freeform to work with others, Apple naturally includes a Shared tab. Browse through all the many forums that users have created. You can also switch between different sorts and views.
If you have a large number of boards and wish to draw attention to a select few, you can do so by designating one as a favorite. You may sort the content and choose the view mode right here.
You guessed it: when you delete a board in the Freeform app, it will appear here for the next 30 days. The data was destroyed forever after 30 days in the app. If you don’t want to wait a month to delete or restore a specific forum, you can do it directly from Recently Deleted.
All versions of Freeform for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS feature these same five categories. If you enable iCloud syncing for Freeform in the Settings app, all of your Apple devices will always have the most up-to-date versions of your boards.
